The power sector accounts for 43% of energy-related CO2 emissions in Indonesia, largely due to extensive fossil fuel use. ViriyaENB supports research-based policy making and practical climate actions aimed at transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources by midcentury.

With a per capita electricity consumption of 1.04MWh, Indonesia produced a total of 308,661 GWh of electricity power in total in 2021., resulting in 240.3 Mt of CO2 emissions for the year.

Fossil fuels dominate the country's electricity generation, with coal accounting for 61.5% of the electricity supply and 84.2% of the related CO2 emissions.

The Indonesian government has ratified a roadmap to phase out coal-fired power plants by 2035. By that year, the goal is for up to 50% of the country's electricity to come from renewable sources.
